At Coroco Coffee, the pursuit of exceptional coffee experiences drives our exploration of the world’s most intriguing coffee origins. We’re thrilled to introduce our latest addition, the Ethiopia Organic Yirgacheffe Chelbesa G1 Natural—a remarkable coffee that encapsulates the essence of its birthplace in every sip.
A Journey to Chelbesa, Yirgacheffe: Unveiling the Terroir
Nestled within the Gedeo Zone of Ethiopia’s Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Region (SNNPR), the Chelbesa kebele (village) stands as a revered coffee-producing area. Here, a canopy of semi-forest cover provides the perfect setting for shade-grown coffee, fostering an environment where the coffee thrives.
The Chelbesa wet mill, established in 2019, serves as a beacon for sourcing fresh coffee cherries from numerous nearby smallholder farmers. In this endeavor, over 760 producers contributed to crafting this Grade 1 natural processed coffee, showcasing the collective dedication and expertise of the local community.
Yirgacheffe: Birthplace of Coffee Excellence
Yirgacheffe holds an esteemed position as the purported birthplace of coffee. This ancient landrace variety-rich region hosts smallholder coffee gardens, predominantly organic and intercropped with food crops. These farming practices maximize the fertile soil’s potential, yielding exceptional coffee beans.
Most Yirgacheffe farmers are smallholders with modest landholdings, selling their cherries to centralized washing stations. This process ensures quality control and amplifies the distinctive terroir of Yirgacheffe in every cup.
The Natural Process: Unveiling the Coffee’s True Character
The Ethiopia Organic Yirgacheffe Chelbesa G1 Natural undergoes a meticulous natural processing method. Only the ripest cherries are harvested, initiating a carefully planned drying process that spans up to four weeks. Whole cherries are dried, preserving their fruity essence. Regular turning of the cherries ensures uniform drying and optimal airflow, safeguarding against spoilage.
Post-drying, the seeds are delicately extracted from the fruit, preparing the coffee beans for export, all while preserving the intrinsic flavors.
Ethiopian Coffee Varietals: A Rich Tapestry of Diversity
Ethiopia boasts an extensive array of wild landrace varietals thriving in its mountainous forests. Research initiatives, such as the Jimma Agricultural Research Center (JARC), diligently explore unique varietals like Wolisho and Dega, named after indigenous trees in the region. These efforts enrich the diverse tapestry of Ethiopian coffee heritage.
Quality Grading: Celebrating Excellence in Every Cup
In Ethiopia, coffee grading combines physical attributes and cup qualities, including altitude, imperfections, and flavor. Grades range from 1 (the highest) to 9 (the lowest), with grades 1 and 2 celebrated as specialty grades. Notably, high-quality natural coffees from Yirgacheffe exhibit distinctive traits, including bright citrus acidity and unparalleled sweetness—a testament to their superior quality.
Tasting Notes: An Exquisite Symphony of Flavors
Our Ethiopia Organic Yirgacheffe Chelbesa G1 Natural is a celebration of taste, featuring tropical fruit notes harmoniously blended with hints of blackberry, mandarin orange, star fruit, and a winey undertone. This symphony of flavors is a tribute to the meticulous cultivation and processing methods employed by the passionate farmers and producers in Chelbesa.
